The Journey of Soul
The soul is that essential
part of our self-awareness that survives death. It embodies your own
higher wisdom and perfect love even if we are not always aware of this.
The soul is our "higher self" or the "inner divine self", being that part
of ourselves that is permanently connected to God. This does not mean that
it is complete in its perfection, only that it is continually aware of the
core of Being, its Divine origin. The soul's natural abode is a refined
spiritual realm. It takes on various bodies in order to gain experience in
the more dense material realm, which we know as physical plane existence.
Each one of us is a soul projecting a part of its consciousness "down"
into physical matter through the medium of the physical body.
Our main purpose is to
expand our awareness and joy of life on this plane to the same degree that
it is experienced by that part of ourselves we call "soul" on the
spiritual plane. For most of us we see our own identity and that of the
soul's as different - a duality. In actual fact it is a continuum of
consciousness as our physical brain consciousness and our soul
consciousness are two states of being for the same entity. However the
undeveloped state of the average person's nervous system (which is the
vehicle for conscious experience) does not allow the experience on the
physical plane of unbounded awareness and spiritual joy. This unbounded
awareness is the permanent experience of the soul within the spiritual
realm. So this is what we need to cultivate. We need to cultivate, while
living in a physical body, the unbroken experience of connectedness to
God, unbounded awareness and pure bliss. We need to live this state 24
hours a day. Then we will have become, in living reality, what we
currently conceptualise as "soul".
In order to realise this
state we try out body after body to understand how to achieve it. We grow
our ability to live as the soul by repeated experimentation with the
dynamics of physical plane living. Often we don't specifically remember
why we, as souls, chose a particular body, or why we pre-planned
particular formative experiences. However we certainly know what we are
doing between physical plane lives when, as souls, we plan our next
experiment. Between lives we have a pretty clear view of all our past
lives, our achievements and failures, as well as our potential future
lives. So between lives, on the basis of what we have already done in
various incarnations, and on the basis of what our vision for our complete
evolution is, we plan the characteristics of our next life; and the
review, preview and planning is experienced simultaneously in a "Nowness"
of pure being. Usually when we incarnate we programme ourselves to forget
about past lives so that we can have a better focus on the current one.
And then when we are ready to start developing multi-dimensional
consciousness while in a physical body, we programme ourselves to develop
curiosity about re-incarnation - or we pre-plan certain experiences of
awakening.
Life after life we get
better and better at "driving" our bodies and this is because we come to
know ourselves better and better. Just as in driving a car one needs to
understand the purpose of a steering wheel, gear stick, brakes, how to
re-fuel, etc we need to understand our body, mind and emotions all of
which combined form our physical plane being. We need to know ourselves in
order to understand how to handle ourselves, so that we can grow towards
more enlightenment and greater joy. For this purpose its helpful to think
of ourselves as energy systems.
Humans As Energy Systems
As humans we have four
bodies and there is a constant energy exchange between them. We have a
physical body, an astral body, a mental body and a soul body. Everyone is
aware , to some degree or other, that they have physical bodies. The
astral body is the seat of the emotions and the mental body the seat of
mental activity. We often experience and use our astral, mental and soul
bodies semi-consciously. We generally do not have the same clarity of
perception about these three bodies as we do about our physical bodies.
Clarity of perception is
linked to free-will and the ability to act. The clearer our consciousness
is when using a particular body, the greater our volition and our ability
to act. Not only do we need to be able to use our mind and emotions and
soul purpose meaningfully, but we also need to integrate this into our
physical brain consciousness. [Two of the easiest practices for
integrating our awareness of our non-physical energies are dreamwork and
meditation. A more strenuous approach is that of therapies involving
"Depth" (or archetypal) Psychology.] Often trance work, hallucinogenic
drugs, and unconscious "channelling" are detrimental to our soul purpose.
These all heighten our awareness of the energies in another body (usually
the astral body) , but sever our awareness of our physical consciousness
at the same time. (This also happens during sleep but the mechanics are
different, and obviously the process is not harmful, unless excessive.)
Any practice that is not integrated into our normal everyday awareness
lessens our ability to handle the energies of the different bodies and
fragments our Being. This is where the emphasis on being "grounded" comes
in. We need to integrate expansions of awareness into our "ground state" -
physical plane living. Some of us however are too grounded - there is only
a vague awareness of anything other than our physical bodies and so the
functioning of our minds, emotions and souls is unclear. The result is
that we are driven by semi-conscious desires, confused by unclear
thinking, and ignorant of soul purpose. In such a situation we are unaware
of ourselves as quadruple energy systems and are at the mercy of our
physical, astral and mental environments.
Once we become
increasingly aware of our physical, emotional, mental and soul bodies we
begin to understand how to regulate the flow of energies between them. We
begin to understand how to direct individual or grouped energies, in
different "qualities" (or "flavours") and with different intensities, in
order to accomplish our objectives. We gain greater facility to uplift
ourselves and our world. The soul body is directly connected to the
Godhead. When our consciousness is polarised within the soul body, we are
fully aware of the presence of God. The other bodies are also connected to
the Godhead, but indirectly - we access the Godhead in these bodies
through images or symbols, feelings, sensations and extended sensory
perceptions (e.g. the subtle sense of touch or smell). The soul has the
ability to be the most powerful regulator of the other three bodies as it
has greatest concentration of energy. So whatever our approach to personal
growth, we should always devote some time to acquiring the awareness of
soul, as well as coming to know our physical, emotional and mental energy
characteristics.
Seven Rays of Energy
Humans, as energy systems,
have access to the seven major streams of energy upon which our universe
is founded. They are primordial in nature, existing since the birth of
creation, but they express themselves in a personalised modality through
individuals and also through group formations. We can speak of a person's
ray quality, or the ray quality of that person's mind or emotions, or the
ray qualities of a culture, country, species, planet - whatever. These
rays are not exclusively aligned with any particular gender, race or
culture in humanity, but individuals or groups may demonstrate one or more
of these rays predominantly. In other words the nature of a person,
community or country is an expression of these rays of energy, and not the
other way around.
If one correctly perceives
the ray quality of any particular manifestation within creation and
follows that energy stream back to its source, one will come into contact
with one of the "seven spirits before the throne", as it is expressed in
the Christian bible. An analogy could be that of following a river
upstream to its source. However in this analogy there would also be
currents in the river that naturally flow upstream in the opposite
direction to those flowing into the sea. These rays can also be equated
with the primordial seven Rishis of Indian philosophy. If one has that
direct cognition of the originating sources of these mighty energies (and
very, very few people on the planet have it currently), one is literally
sitting at the feet of God.
I have tried to describe
the "essentialness" of each ray, to the best of my meagre perceptions. As
a result the brief descriptions that follow could be a bit cryptic, or
even misleading and might need some contemplation in order to gather
personal significance.
Ray 1 The Ray of Will
Will. Power. Dynamic
direct movement. Activities of destruction; synthesis; abstraction.
Primordial manifesting impulse. Unity. The urge to BE. Determination.
Ray 2 The Ray of Love
Love. Wisdom. Magnetism.
Unitedness. Coherency. Results in spiral motion. The urge to bring
duality, or two polarities, into relationship. Attraction.
Ray 3 The Ray of Creative
Intelligence
Intelligence. Creativity.
Manipulation (in a morally neutral sense). A shuttling movement. The
activity of weaving. The urge to adjust material into differentiated
forms.Adaptability.
Ray 4 The Ray of Harmony or
Conflict.
Harmony. Beauty. Conflict.
Relatedness between different elements (positive or negative). Orbital,
cyclical or spiral motion. Paradox. The urge to wield centripetal and/or
centrifugal force. Artistry.
Ray 5 The Ray of Rationality
Rationality. Discernment..
Movement into separateness. The activity of dividing. The urge to
discriminate or categorise. Construction of thought forms. Analysis.
Ray 6 The Ray of Idealism
Idealism. Devotion.
Visioning the goal. Parabolic motion. The urge to identify with an ideal.
Aspiration and effort.
Ray 7 The Ray of Rhythmic
Order
Order. Ritual. Progressive
movement. Sequential activity. The urge to systematise. Organisation.
There are actually more
than seven rays and it seems that as humans we could have access to up to
12 or 14 ray energies. However, most of us in incarnation have energy
bodies built up out of only these seven. This is because we build up the
energy qualities of our physical, astral, mental and soul bodies (the soul
body is also called the causal body) by working with specific ray
energies. And until recently only these seven major streams of energy have
been available to us, through our long journey of repeated incarnations.
On this planet, for all but the Ascended Spiritual Teachers, (and some
advanced students) the other rays are not sufficiently stabilised in
consciousness to be available for real examination or on-going experience.
It is one thing to dimly perceive a ray, or conceptually accept the
existence of its energy quality. And quite another to wield it with the
power and sure knowledge of the effects that this will produce. Currently
however there are a number of children who are incarnating with a 10th or
12th ray component in their astral bodies. When they reach adulthood there
will demonstrate these more clearly and promote a better understanding of
these rays.
All the ray energies are
inherent in all forms throughout creation, but at any particular time a
particular being will express particular qualities over and above others.
So when we speak of a 6th ray astral body we mean the outstanding
emotional characteristics of that person are of the 6th ray. Other ray
energies can simultaneously exist in the emotional body, but are not
obvious (and could also be almost impossible to bring into manifestation).
However the possibility exists, for certain individuals, that latent ray
energies can be accessed and then actualised in order to accomplish a
particular phase of spiritual growth.
It is better to try and
identify one's ray qualities by direct observation, or from a reliable
source, rather than from a check list of ray qualities in some book. It is
of little value to decide that one has, a 6th ray astral body for example,
based on a cursory academic observation, and leave it at that. One needs
to know oneself, and this means understanding and handling the energies of
one's four energy bodies. Simply defining a part of oneself in a
generalised way as this or that particular ray does not lead to
self-knowledge, or to ray knowledge. It could be best to start to try and
understand one's purposes, habits, impulses, desires, attractions,
aversions and so on, and how these affect one's inner experience and outer
behaviour. Securing this knowledge first will enable us to easily
translate it into an understanding of our ray energies when required.
The more one advances
along the spiritual path the more important it becomes to correctly
understand one's ray energies as these will condition one's mode of
approach to the Divine. This is particularly so when preparing for
initiation as it is important to understand the nature of the ray energies
involved in a particular initiation (even if one doesn't use ray qualities
as a conceptual framework). This means sufficient understanding of the
energy to be mastered for that particular initiation as well as the
energies of one's own bodies through which one has to handle the
initiatory energy. This knowledge would be to a level of detail
appropriate to the person's chosen mode for self-development.
Initiation
Initiations are the
challenges presented to us to integrate more intense levels of different
ray energies. An initiation might involve integration within any of our
four energy bodies, separately or simultaneously. Initiations occur during
the course of our lives either from the process of human evolution under
Nature's laws, or because we have pre-planned them during the inter-life
period before incarnation, or under the direct sponsorship of a spiritual
mentor.
In the first case we
precipitate initiations by our desire for more happiness and our attempts
to change our lives accordingly. This leads to an automatic, impersonal
response from the Guiding Intelligences of human evolution. We are
presented with energies that can assist us to achieve greater happiness,
if we integrate them into our being and use them responsibly for our own
good and also for the good of other life-forms. As there is no direct
guidance in this type of initiation it is left up to our own innate
intelligence as to how to deal with the intensification of our energies.
It is a hit and miss affair for most of us and consequently we suffer a
lot of setbacks and usually become more ineffective and unhappier while we
are learning to integrate the energies. Once we are familiar with the
operation of the new energies and can handle them effectively we move
ourselves to a more expanded state of consciousness and have successfully
"passed" the particular initiation.
In the second case, the
initiatory process is under the conscious direction of our souls. As we
approach an initiation we start to get very definite inner messages from
our souls as to what we should be doing to integrate the required higher
levels of energies. In this case the initiation is pre-defined and we are
at least subconsciously aware of the desired outcome. Because we have a
sub-conscious ideal that we are aiming for, failing to integrate the new
energies often leads to a crushing sense of defeat and a shattering of our
self-image. These type of initiations are usually life-changing and can
involve an entirely different approach to some or all aspects of
ourselves. As one battles to integrate these energies one can suffer from
neuroses and excessive fatigue, and an overwhelming sense of loss. Usually
soul-directed initiations cut through our attachments to our possessions,
bodies, emotions, or cherished ideals - hence the sense of loss. However
once this is overcome a new sense of power and freedom is attained, and
these we gladly share with others.
In the third case we
approach the initiation with full consciousness, which makes it less
confusing, but does not make it any easier. In fact these are usually the
most difficult because if one is under the guidance of a true spiritual
mentor one is on a really accelerated growth path. One has the added
difficulty of having to make decisions about how to handle energies at
speed, while at the same time maintaining persistent endeavour and a
stable consciousness. In this case the natural processes of Nature or of
one's own soul are offset and the Mentor takes temporary responsibility
for the pace and characteristics of our evolutionary path. An awesome
responsibility ! From our sides we are stretched to beyond breaking point,
and in fact self-transcendence is frequently the key to this type of
initiation.
Whatever initiations we
may be facing we should realise that they have not been thrust upon us as
if we were a victims of blind circumstance. They are happening under Law -
the exact law would depend on the level of our consciousness and the
current purpose of our soul. When we enter into the "initiatory field"
there is no turning back. There is no way out and there is no way around -
the only way open is forward and through.
Past Lives
Initiations are milestones
on our journey to full soul awareness on the physical plane, through
repeated incarnations. Not all the difficulties confronting us in our
lives are initiatory processes however. Often negative circumstances
(physical or psychological circumstances) are the consequences of negative
thoughts and actions that we performed in the past. "Past" could be
yesterday or it could mean 10 000 years ago. [A simple way of looking at
the difference is that initiations generally fit the proactive plan of our
souls for our progress in this and future existences, while negative karma
are the results of our past existences and so are corrective and
reactive.] Whatever the case we do not need to blame anyone else for our
own unhappiness. This is a primary spiritual key - we take full
responsibility for everything that happens in our lives and in our
psyches, whether it is good or bad. If bad we try to understand what in
the present we do that is unskilful. "Unskilful" is this context means not
in accord with the laws of evolution. It could be as obvious as drug and
alcohol abuse that debilitates our nervous systems and tears holes in our
astral bodies, or spending unwarranted time in negative feelings or
separatist ideals, or it could be something as subtle as not taking time
to experience our essential inner unbounded nature on a regular basis. The
first rule for overcoming negative experiences is to completely let go of
victim-hood. Let go of the "why me" syndrome. Why not you ? The question
is just as meaningless. We stop seeing ourselves as victims of our pasts
and we resolve to do something about it, remembering to honour ourselves
and all other beings on this planet with compassion and kindness. It can
at times be very difficult to understand the mechanics of the
manifestation of negative occurrences as past causes are frequently
obscure, multitudinous and extend in all directions to almost infinite
complexity. Its just as difficult to understand the manifestation of
positive occurrences but we usually just enjoy them mindlessly without
pausing for reflection. Also we often don't like to admit to our own
negativities, and don't see how we are attracting negativity to ourselves
by our habitual attitudes through the principle of resonance. In actual
fact negative experiences are opportunities for great lessons and for
motivating us to expand our awareness. But what can make things more
complicated is a lack of purpose and a lack of soul-awareness. Without
these we do not have a reliable centre in our lives to serve as a
reference point. Without a reference point it is difficult to perceive the
significance of the events in our lives and of our psychological states.
Without seeing the significance, or value, it is difficult to understand
how to use our experiences to come out of unhappiness, to free our
awareness from habitual reactions, to enlighten ourselves and our world.
So what is important is to be able to see the significance of past events,
future potentials, but most of all of current experience, all with
reference to the unwavering essential consciousness of our souls. With
reference to our soul purpose.
In order to understand the
"reasons of significance" for the situations of our lives, whether the
situation is good or bad, we need to train ourselves to become aware of
ourselves as souls. This means to become aware of our essential integrity,
clarity, compassion, skilfulness, wisdom, purpose, and universality. There
are many meditation techniques available that can assist us to do this.
And regular meditation or "centering" of some sort is essential for any
spiritual progress. In addition, what accelerates our soul journey is a
persistent intention to realise ourselves as souls in full waking
consciousness. Intention first, and then the necessary assistance appears.
Part of that assistance
could be a clearer perception of past life conditioning. And when it comes
to contemplating our past lives, unless we do this by the light of the
soul, we can easily lapse into voyeuristic fantasy or become overwhelmed
by the energies we come into contact with. So we need to proceed with
caution. And we need to have as our intention the goals of understanding
and enlightenment, not sensationalistic curiosity.
An examination of our past
lives can be very fruitful in that it shows us the trends of our
characters, the talents we might have latent, the lessons we need to learn
and the overall theme or purpose of our soul in relation to our present
existence. If we become aware of previous existences it is best to do so
with a measure of detachment. We have already lived those lives , we do
not need to immerse ourselves in them again. All we need to gain from
observing some of our previous characteristics is greater insight as to
how we can expand our hearts and our minds in the present. How we can we
fill ourselves and our world with love and happiness. It is more accurate
not to regard previous existences as ourselves , but as entities related
to ourselves, as "incarnational relatives". We may have similar
characteristics but we are not the same identity we were in the past - not
even in this life if one looks at the progression from infancy to
adulthood. So it is important to view the previous versions of ourselves
as non-identical with ourselves and above all to regard them with
detachment and compassion - not with fear, not with anger, not with
attraction, not with pride. Otherwise we just strengthen the tendencies of
our own ignorance. If we come across something unpleasant we bless and
release that part of ourselves involved. If we come across something
pleasant we rejoice impartially. No identification, just witnessing. In
soul consciousness all existences are simultaneous and so we literally
assist other versions of ourselves by not interfering through attachment
but by sending compassion, love and upliftment. In this way we can change
our pasts as easily as we can change our futures. We just need to act with
courage and integrity and maintain our awareness in the clear essential
light of the soul.
Dreamwork
In dreaming the "distance"
between physical plane awareness and soul awareness is lessened and this
provides oporturtunities to maintain greater soul awareness. Dreamwork is
a generic term denoting approaches to expanding our awareness by paying
attention to the contents of our dreams. Dreams generally fall into 3
categories : i) dreams that release stress accumulated from our day to day
activities, ii) dreams that give us deeper insights into our own psyches,
and iii) dreams that encompass interaction with other entities.
The first category of
dreams are not specifically powerful in expanding consciousness. Typically
they have a mixed content with a low emotional charge. They can be
regarded as part of the body-mind's automatic process of maintaining
equilibrium. If however there is a theme of a recurring nature it can
provide insight into patterns of behaviour in our daily lives that are
causing us unnecessary stress. Generally these types of dreams can be
interpreted at the surface level of presented visual content, and the
images can be taken as literally representing the similar circumstances or
persons in our waking lives.
The second category of
dream is usually more abstruse, carries a high emotional charge, is
constructed of symbolic rather than literal images, and brings energy to
consciousness that has previously been hidden within the deeper (or
higher) layers of the psyche - including our souls. These dreams are less
frequent than the first category. They occur as a prelude to, or during,
intense psychological growth; or are urgent messages from unknown parts of
ourselves that psychological growth is imminent or necessary. It is often
difficult to interpret these dreams correctly, precisely because they
bring to our awareness energies with which we have not yet consciously
dealt. Consequently our ability to easily integrate them into our everyday
awareness is what is lacking and so some effort is required. As the
imagery is symbolic and always uniquely personal (avoid standard
definitions given by dream books or dictionaries of symbolism - our
psyches all use visual symbols in a highly individualistic way) it is
easier to examine the emotions connected to the images rather than try to
determine the raw meaning of the images themselves. Once one has reviewed
a dream and become aware of the emotional energy contained in it, and come
to some understanding of the relevance of that energy in one's life, one
will naturally begin to grasp the significance of the dream symbols
employed. Usually the psyche is very economical and one visual image or
sequence will have multiple levels of meaning.
While the first two
categories of dreams are common to pretty much everyone, experience of the
third category is dependent on the particular nature of a person's psyche
and path of self-development. Some people communicate with other entities
(not merely animated representations of their own internal energies), and
consciously travel to other dimensions where non-physical entities
congregate. This is usually initiated by the other entities and not by the
dreamer, or alternatively is initiated by the dreamer unconsciously. Again
each dreaming experience is of specific value for a particular person and
there are no general interpretations which are applicable to all.
The second category of
dreams can be extremely useful for accessing deeper insights into the
expression of soul. Three things are necessary to take advantage of them.
The first is clarity of dreaming, the second is remembering the dreams,
and the third is emotional self-awareness. Clarity of dreams can be
enhanced by practising concrete visualisation with physical objects or
pictures. Simply take the item and try to instantaneously reproduce it
mentally in full detail. Hold for a few seconds and then let it go.
Practice every day for 10 to 15 minutes and you will be amazed at the
results. Remembering dreams is best initiated by writing down every
fragment of a dream you actually do remember immediately upon waking - no
matter how arbitrary or unimportant the fragment might seem. However you
need only review the dreams that seem particularly important or emotional
. Emotional self-awareness is a life-long task. It starts with the
intention to become self-aware and some tools to do so include being
mindful in the present moment, daily reflection on intentions and emotions
of the past 24 hours, meditation, psychotherapy and physical practices
which dislodge stuck behaviour patterns. Basically any practice that helps
us to become more aware and dispassionate about our emotional energies is
helpful. This does not mean rejection or diminution of the importance of
our emotions. It means that we get enough distance from ourselves to enjoy
our unique energy qualities without becoming submerged in a maelstrom of
emotion or intoxicated with our energy to the point of unmindfulness.
Grace
In all our intentions and
effort to be happier, to lead more productive and integrated lives, to
expand our awareness, we can only do so much from our side. What we leave
undone, we should leave to Grace. Grace is that quality of the Universal
Consciousness that flows to uplift our lives when we are grateful and
trusting. To increase the flow of Universal grace is easy - we simply
increase the flow of our personal gratitude; for anything; for everything.
Its not good to fret, fear and worry about shortcomings in ourselves and
in the world around us - realistic perceptions certainly, but no
judgements. We simply can be aware and leave it at that. We change what we
can, be grateful for that, and allow Grace to flow where change is not
possible. "God helps those who helps themselves" is a time-worn adage - it
is also an irrevocable Universal Law. We can use it all the time - just
some discernment needed to get self-help and Grace in the right
proportions ....
Three Meditations on the Rays
The three techniques
described in this section should ideally be preceded and concluded with an
opening and closing alignment. One of each follows :
Opening
Alignment.
(duration about 7 to 10 minutes). This exercise can
also be used at any time one feels the need.
Sit quietly and
comfortably with your back reasonably upright. Take 5 to 10 deep breaths
making sure to breathe low into the abdomen. Then take a few minutes to
relax and simply experience yourself breathing naturally. Don't
concentrate on your breath, just be aware of it with no specific purpose
or objective. Shift your awareness to your physical body, then to your
feelings and then to your thoughts, spending 1 or 2 minutes on each. Don't
worry if this does not happen in an orderly fashion. Just gently bring
your awareness back to what your are intending to be aware of. e.g. if you
are being aware of your body and thoughts keep distracting you,
acknowledge your thoughts and then bring your awareness gently back to
your body. Don't judge any sensation, feeling or thought as good or bad.
Simply be aware and observe. Once you have spent 1 or 2 minutes observing
your thoughts, take your awareness to between your eyebrows and let it
rest there for a minute or so. Then visualise a sphere of intensely bright
gold or white light about six inches above your head. This a subtle visual
manifestation of the light of your soul. Visualise a shaft of light
extending from this sphere to the centre of your chest, and then radiating
from there throughout your body. Feel that this light connects your body,
feelings and thoughts together and unifies them in the light of the soul.
Be aware that the essence of this light is infinite silence and infinite
love. Feel your entire being absorb the qualities of infinite peace and
love. Move your awareness again to between your eyebrows. You are now
ready to begin.
Closing Alignment
Repeat opening alignment.
Then from the soul light that suffuses your body, from the centre of your
heart, see that light moving outwards in radiant spirals blessing,
uplifting and bringing joy to your environment. Don't strain. Expand your
soul to whatever degree is comfortable - to just outside your body, your
immediate surroundings, your town or city... the entire cosmos - whatever.
Relax.
Breathe.
Enjoy.
Bring your light and
consciousness back to between your eyebrows. Think or softly chant "Om".
Give over ownership for all that is to All That IS...
First meditation.
Review your most important
actions in the past. You can take any single period. An hour, a week, a
day, a year. Note at least ten actions (including speech). Identify the
energy body most involved with your motivations for these behaviours i.e.
is a motivation based on a physical appetite, an emotional
reaction/impulse, rational or intuitive thought, conventional expediency,
or spiritual impulse, or combinations of these. Be careful not to confuse
emotion with intuition. Intuition delivers clear knowledge. Emotion
delivers emotional experiences. Likewise do not confuse rational thought
with intellectual self-justification. Rational thought analyses cause and
effect. Self-justification tries to fit a non-rational motivation (which
might be quite valid) into an intellectual framework. Once you have
determined the quality of the motivations, examine the characteristics
(not the effects) of your behaviours. Combining the motivations and
characteristics (outer display) try to categorise them into ray qualities.
Don't worry about whether
you are 100% accurate. Use your best guess. Then ask yourself : "Where
does this quality come from ? ". Don't try to answer. Don't wait for an
answer. Just BE.
Second meditation.
For this meditation the OM
may be sounded mentally or chanted softly. Pronunciation is as in "got"
not as in "home". Start the sequence in the order given below visualising
yourself saturated with translucent and radiant light of the appropriate
colour. At the same time as visualising, conceptually feel (an extension
of the sense of touch, just as visualisation is an extension of the sense
of sight) the quality listed. Once "systematic order" is reached reverse
the sequence, moving from there to "deep aspiration" and so on, ending
with the Cosmic love of God. A complete round has 15 in the sequence,
"systematic order" being felt only once before reversing the sequence.
OM Cosmic love of God /
Light transcendentaly radiant (invisible)
OM Gold or bright red /
dynamism
OM Pale blue / love or
indigo / wisdom
OM Jade-green / activity
or emerald green / intelligence
OM Gold-yellow / harmony
or sun yellow / beauty
OM Orange / precise
discrimination
OM Cerise / loving
kindness or compassion or royal blue / deep aspiration
OM Violet or white /
systematic order or effortless rhythm
Third meditation.
The use of the will and
visualisation is required to imaginatively create an experience of the
states described in the following sequence. The experience should be that
of the totality of the state including all the components described i.e.
one should be immersed in the totality of the state and be aware of that
immersion at a level of detail. Don't strain. Just do according to your
natural capacity. Once one has become practised in this immersion a
further stage of development is to wilfully witness one's total immersion
from the vantage of the Onlooker. For this meditation "OM" may be sounded
mentally or chanted softly. Pronunciation is as in "got" not as in "home".
OM
Wholeness, fullness, as
vast as the Cosmos. Surrounding the entire Universe and thrilling the core
of every atom. Infinite and eternal.
OM
From that Wholeness
-Wholeness collapses onto itself, a single point, concentrated as pure
potentiality. The universe collapsed into a single infinitesimal point of
pure self-aware consciousness.
OM
The point is
aware of being aware of itself as a point, and realises it is two - a part
that is observing and a part that is being observed. Consciousness is no
longer in pure unity, it is aware of the "other". And the "other" is
conscious of being observed.
OM
Be aware that the two
parts, the observer and the observed, are connected by the process of
observing, which is consciousness flowing. Consciousness moving from the
observer to the observed and reflecting back again. A rhythmic wave is set
up from the interplay, and the wave gets faster and faster, bigger and
bigger, growing upon itself.
OM
The wave projects
vibrations which solidify into a central sphere spinning on its own axis
and holding minor spheres in orbit around itself by the nurturance of its
light. The wholeness of the spheres moving together manifests beauty.
OM
The central sphere notes
the differences in the minor spheres - rates of orbit and axial rotation,
colour-hue, size, shape, pitch of sound emitted, and so on. In itself each
minor sphere is not yet perfect.
OM
Each minor sphere gathers
from the central sphere the vision of its optimal state (orbit,
colour-hue, size, etc) and hurries to adjust itself in order to match the
vision.
OM
The vision is matched by
the minor spheres and the whole system pulsates with perfect rhythmic
order, cohesiveness and beauty. Light and consciousness flashes from
sphere to sphere and bliss permeates all.
OM
The central sphere can no
longer be seen., only a blazing source of light. All-pervasive bliss
overtakes one's entire being until nothing else exists. Unity prevails.
Unity realises itself as a point of pure potentiality.
