What makes the Rolfing process so special is that it physically
changes the body, and the changes are quite permanent. A person will
typically gain an inch or so in height, and attain greater mobility and
flexibility. Natural symmetrical alignment is enhanced or
re-established, i.e. arches created in flat feet or spinal curves
increased or lessened. Many types of soft tissue maladies such as
carpal tunnel syndrome, back and neck pain, to name a few, are
permanently alleviated.
Rolfing is a ten session series that achieves these changes by
gently manipulating the body's connective tissue. Once pressure is
applied to the tissue, it softens, lengthens and moves. It is usually
described as a welcome warmth / release / burning sensation. There is
no tissue damage, i.e. bruising, and if there is any discomfort it
disappears instantly with the finish of the manipulation. Most people
find the experience pleasurable, and enjoy the lightness and freedom
that is evoked in their bodies to greater and greater degrees as the
series progresses.
A word about connective tissue; it is the most extensive tissue in
the body. It is what gives the body it's shape. A muscle cell will not
develop in the womb unless there is a strand of connective tissue to
attach itself to . It holds not only the skeletal system together, but
also all of the muscle tissue and organs of the body. It is also the
substance through which the acupuncture meridians flow. It is the
body's superhighway of information...each collagen fiber in the
connective tissue contains a bit of the cerebral spinal fluid which
protects and helps regulate the brain and central nervous system. It
infiltrates the body like a vast and microscopic spider's web.
Rolfer's are trained and certified by the Rolf Institute in Boulder,
Colorado. It is a highly selective school that has been in existence
since the 1960's. Since that time there have been many spin-offs based
on the Rolfing process.
Who Benefits from Rolfing?>
People from all walks of life benefit from Rolfing, including:
People riddled with Chronic Pain and Stress (i.e. from whiplash, car accidents, sports
injuries, repetitive muscle strain from factory and computer occupations).
Computer users suffering from hand, arm, neck, and shoulder pain.
Athletes, Dancers, Musicians, and other people interested in improved performance.
Students of Yoga, Meditation, and Martial Arts.
Women preparing their bodies to better handle the extra weight and strains from
pregnancy and labor.
Women experiencing post-childbirth low back and pelvis pain.
Children of all ages, including toddlers. Pre-teenagers gain balance to help them
through the emotional time of puberty.
People in psychotherapy, by facilitating a deeper connection to their emotional
conflicts. People may experience considerable psychological/spiritual growth as the
emotional history stored in their bodies is released.
